Suggestions on Sponsoring a Trig*Star Event

The contest is usually held in the spring semester, from February through April.  Contact with the high school should be made in the fall or winter months, if possible, so scheduling a date for the land surveying presentation to the students (and the Trig*Star Contest) can be made.  During the presentation, besides discussing the rewarding careers in surveying and mapping and the practical applications of mathematics, you will also want to describe the Trig*Star Program.  One of your goals during the presentation will be to encourage the students to participate in the Trig*Star Contest.

As the surveyor working with a local high school you will be considered the "local sponsor". However, finding an additional sponsor (or sponsors) for your Trig*Star event will make it easier to offset your expenses and to offer attractive prizes to the students that participate in the contest.  To start with, your local WSLS Chapter may want to cosponsor the event with you to get things going in your area.

Trig*Star prizes don't have to be big.  A $25 to $50 prize is more than adequate for the high school winner.  As the program grows and additional sponsors are lined up, the prize could be larger or even a second and third place prizes could be offered.

Sponsorship funds may also be needed to offset related Trig*Star event costs, such as:

Copying handouts for the presentation to the students

        Copying the Trig*Star exams

        Copying the certificates of participation

        Engraving the winner’s plaque
